Groundbreaking Research: Air Purifiers Reduced Illness Rates by Up to 18%

12 Sep 2024

Pallas Air, along with its subsidiary Lifa Air, has been actively involved in a three-year interdisciplinary E3 research project aimed at reducing the spread of viruses and pathogens by improving indoor air quality. This week’s newly released results confirm that air purification can play a critical role in curbing the transmission of viruses and bacteria.

The E3 project’s primary goal is to develop solutions that enable society to continue functioning smoothly, even in the face of various pathogens, epidemics, and pandemics. As part of the research, air purifiers from Lifa Air, among others, were installed in four daycare centers in Helsinki, where studies were conducted to assess whether cleaner indoor air could help reduce the spread of respiratory infections and stomach viruses among children and staff.

One of the most noteworthy findings from the E3 study is that daycare centers using air purifiers saw up to an 18% reduction in illness rates.

This is a significant result. Investments in air hygiene and health safety pay off and they have measurable benefits. Pallas Air’s purifiers have been tested not only in daycare centers but also in hospitals and office environments, with outstanding results. We've received very positive feedback from users, and now we have strong scientific evidence confirming that air purification helps reduce sickness,” said Tomi Viitanen, CEO of Pallas Air.

Clean indoor air is vital to the functioning of society, as it directly contributes to reducing illness and absenteeism. This has both human and economic benefits, as fewer sick days translate into considerable cost savings for society at large.

The E3 project, which seeks to develop science-backed solutions to prevent the spread of viruses, is one of the largest co-innovation initiatives ever undertaken in Finland. The three-year project, which began in 2021, has a budget of €12 million and is funded by Business Finland along with contributions from partner companies, including Pallas Air.
